Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to of the most common questions – call us if you can’t find your answer here.

How long does treatment take?

On average treatment takes between 18-24 months. The time varies depending on each individual case.

How often will I need appointments?

When you are wearing braces or aligners we like to see you every 6-10 weeks for a review and adjustment appointment. This time can vary depending on each individual.

Will I be able to eat normally?

For the first few days after your initial fit or adjustment appointment you may want to eat softer foods as your teeth may feel tender. After a few days this will pass and you will be able to eat normally. However, eating hard, chewy and sticky foods will break your brace. We advise keeping sugary foods and fizzy drinks to a minimum.

What should I do if I break my brace?

Contact the surgery as soon as possible and we will book you an appointment to repair the breakage. In the meantime, if it is causing discomfort try placing wax over the problem area. Repeated breakages will lengthen the over all treatment time, so be careful!

How long do I have to wear retainers for?

Retainers need to be worn for as long as you want straight teeth. You may be able to reduce how often you wear the retainers, but if you stop completely your teeth will move.

Can I transfer my NHS treatment to you?

The NHS fund only a single course of orthodontic treatement per patient and this is paid to the provider (orthodontist) who starts your treatement. You cannot change your Orthodontic provider mid treatement without prior consent from the local commissioning team, via your original referring dentist.

When do I wear my retainers?

We advise that removable retainers are worn full time for the first 3 months and then part-time, usually whilst you sleep, after this. To begin with you will need to wear you retainers every night, but sometimes this can be reduced to every other night. We will advise of how often you need to wear your retainers and if you can reduce wear.

Is there only one type of retainer?

There are different retainers:

• Essix retainer (invislble gum shield) used after treatement finished to keep teeth in their finishing position.

• Removable (Hawley) retainer to be worn at night
• A bonded wire (bonded behind your front teeth) although we do not fit these ourselves as we prefer Essix retainers that offer total teeth coverage.

My teeth "feel loose", is this normal?

It’s completely normal for your teeth to feel slightly loose, this is because the teeth are being moved into new positions.

Why do I have gaps between my teeth I didn’t have before?

These gaps have formed because we are creating and filling space between your teeth to align them. The gaps will be closed before the brace is removed.

Does Orthodontic treatment hurt?

Orthodontic treatment can be uncomfortable after your initial fit appointment and when adjustments are made, but this only last a few days and can be managed with painkillers like those you’d take for a headache. You may also develop some ulcers from the brackets, especially after the initial fit appointment. This can be managed by placing small pieces of wax onto the brackets to prevent them rubbing, these are available from reception.

Do I still need to see my regular Dentist?

Yes, you will still need to see your regular dentist for check-ups and general treatments, failure to do so may result in your losing your NHS registration with your dentist.

Will orthodontics affect my speech?

Some patients lisp when there braces are initially fitted, but soon adapt and stop.

Can I still play contact sports with a brace?

Yes you can, however we advise you wear a gum shield to protect your brace. We can make you a gumshield or you can purchase one from a sports shop.

How often do I have to wear my functional/removable appliance?

If you have a functional or removable appliance you need to wear it as often and for as long as possible to get the best results as quickly as possible.

Will my teeth move back once the brace is removed?

No, because we will provide you with a retainer, which will hold your teeth in their new alignment.
